Hyder: Intense bombing near Pakistan border

CNN correspondent Kamal Hyder
CNN correspondent Kamal Hyder

(CNN) -- U.S.-led airstrikes Monday targeted the Zawar Kili complex, a sprawling Al-Qaeda training camp and tunnel complex in eastern Afghanistan. The bombing has been so intense at times that tremors could be felt miles away. Kamal Hyder was just across the border in Pakistan and filed this report by videophone.

HYDER: This morning, again, [there was] intense bombing in the Zawar Kili area. [It was] so intense that rocks have cracked up, big rocks have cracked up, thousands of meters into Pakistani territory.

And the Pakistani military, of course, is just a thousand meters away in certain areas. The bombing was very intense, and throughout the day reconnaissance activity was seen over the Zawar Kili area as well as B-52s trailing across the blue skies heading for Zawar Kili.

There are also reports that there is an easy calm in Khowst. It is business as usual. However, as of yesterday, the bombing ... shows that the Zawar Kili area and Khowst [are] still a primary target[s] for [coalition] aircraft.

CNN: Kamal, give us a firsthand view of what that was like to be so close to that bombing, and what does it feel like, and what did it look like to you.

HYDER: Well, for us, it's an experience that we just see once or twice, but the people manning the borders, the Pakistani militia forces and the Pakistan army, are bearing the brunt of it. They are watching these explosions so close by. So I think it is frightening indeed, but they are holding their posts, and they are making sure no terrorist comes across here.
