MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- A man accused of plotting to blow up abortion clinics was indicted Tuesday by a federal grand jury.
Federal prosecutors have said 35-year-old Stephen John Jordi was plotting to firebomb abortion clinics, as well as churches and gay bars across the eastern United States. He allegedly was on the brink of carrying out his plans when he was arrested November 11.
Jordi was indicted on charges of attempted arson, distribution of information on explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm -- a silencer. An arraignment was set for Wednesday.
If convicted, Jordi faces up to 20 years in jail on each the first two counts, 10 years in jail on the third and as much as $250,000 in fines on each charge.
Jordi's attorney, Marc Seitles, said his client's side of the story has only started to come out.
FBI officials began investigating Jordi, a former Army Ranger who lived in Coconut Creek, in August after his brother called authorities to tell them Jordi planned to bomb abortion clinics.
On the day he was arrested, Jordi and an FBI informant bought gasoline cans, flares, starter fluid and propane tanks, an affidavit said. The informant also allegedly sold Jordi a pistol and silencer.
