BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- A fourth American missionary died overnight from wounds in a drive-by shooting in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the U.S. military said Tuesday.
A fifth Baptist missionary was wounded in the attack. The missionaries were working on a water-purification project, church officials and friends said.
Larry T. Elliott, 60, and Jean Dover Elliott, 58, of Cary, North Carolina, and Karen Denise Watson, 38, of Bakersfield, California, were killed in the attack Monday, according to the Southern Baptist Convention International Mission Board.
David E. McDonnall, 29, of Rowlett, Texas, died Tuesday morning as he was being flown to a military support hospital in Baghdad, according to the U.S. military and Southern Baptist Convention board.
McDonnall's wife, Carrie Taylor McDonnall, 26, remains in critical condition, according to the Baptist group.
Gunmen fired AK-47 assault weapons on the civilian vehicle, witnesses said.
Mission Board President Jerry Rankin said Southern Baptists shared in the sorrow and grief.
"In times like this, there are no words that will take away the pain of a loved one's violent death," Rankin said in a statement. "Everyone in the IMB family and everyone who loves Southern Baptists' overseas workers are grieving with the family members and co-workers of these precious souls." (Friends remember)
An Iraqi police officer found the bullet-riddled car shortly after Monday afternoon's shooting.
"We do not know what the five U.S. citizens were doing at the time of the attack, but we do know they were in the Mosul area to deliver relief supplies," the military said.
Monday's attack is among a rash of attacks on civilians this week and last week.
Early Tuesday in Mosul, gunmen killed a relative of a translator who works for coalition forces and wounded another family member, the military said.
Later, four people were killed and two Iraqis were wounded when two vehicles were attacked near the border of Karbala and Babil, said Capt. Abbas Mohammed Hussein of Babil police. The six-person team was believed to be working on irrigation efforts.
Of the four killed, two were Iraqis, Hussein said.
The Dutch Foreign Ministry said one of those killed was a Dutch engineer. The German Foreign Ministry said the other was German, and that the two were working for a German company.
Babil police said they think "terrorist elements" were behind that attack, Hussein said.

On March 9, Fern Holland, 33, a lawyer, and Robert Zangas, 44, a press officer, along with their Iraqi translator, were ambushed, shot and killed while traveling on a road south of Baghdad. (Full story)

Also Tuesday in Babil, Iraqi police defused five explosives found on a train track, Hussein, the town's police captain, said. Babil is near Karbala, southwest of Baghdad. The Mahawil-Hindiyah line, which connects Baghdad to Basra, is used to transport coalition supplies, Hussein said.One person was killed and four others wounded Tuesday evening when a rocket hit the grounds of a secondary school in Baghdad, Iraqi police said. The school is in Baghdad's Al-Karkh region. No other details were immediately available.CNN's Guy Henshilwood contributed to this report
