Mitch Landrieu will formally announce his candidacy for mayor of New Orleans on Wednesday, senior campaign staff members told CNN. Landrieu, a member of a famous political family in Louisiana, will almost certainly emerge as a front-runner among a crowded field of challengers to Ray Nagin. Landrieu's sister, Mary, is a Democratic senator from Louisiana, and his father, Moon, was the mayor of New Orleans for most of the 1970s. Landrieu's announcement follows his February 3 decision to run, when he said he would "represent all of our people, not any one party, any one faction or any one political ideology." At the time, he said he would make the formal campaign announcement after the special legislative session that ended last week. Moon Landrieu, the last white mayor of the city, maintains a strong political base there, especially among blacks. As a city councilman he led a successful push for a city ordinance outlawing segregation based on race or religion in public accommodations and he was the first New Orleans mayor to open city government to a large number of blacks. Mitch Landrieu, 45, served in the Louisiana state Legislature before being elected lieutenant governor. The nonpartisan election will take place April 22. It was originally scheduled for February, but was postponed following extensive flood damage in the city triggered by Hurricane Katrina.
