(CNN) -- At least 22 people have died in floods in Romania in the past eight days, and about 14,000 others have had to flee their homes, a Romanian Emergency Situations official told CNN Wednesday.

Heavy rain is continuing to fall in the northeastern region of the country, where the flooding is taking place, and is expected to continue at least through Thursday morning, said spokesman Alin Maghiar.

Recent flooding in France following heavy rains there left as many as 25 people dead.
