He’s had a successful season at club level, but Brazil star Oscar will have to wait a bit longer for international salvation.

The Chelsea player has been ruled out of the Copa America tournament in Chile due to injury.

The 23-year-old’s only appearance for his country since last year’s World Cup disappointment was March’s friendly win over France, in which he scored.

Brazil coach Dunga has omitted the attacking midfielder from his 23-man squad after learning he hurt himself while training with the English Premier League champion.

“We don’t want to take any risks with Oscar,” Dunga said during Tuesday’s press conference. “He will be back for the World Cup qualifiers, which start after Copa America.”

Oscar, whose last appearances for the Seleção were the 7-1 semifinal humiliation against Germany and defeat in the third-place playoff against The Netherlands, said on Twitter he was “very sad” not to be part of the squad.

Oscar has been a key player for Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea, scoring seven goals in 41 appearances this season as the London side added a domestic championship to its League Cup success after a disappointing last-16 exit in the European Champions League.

Brazil will be confident of lifting the trophy at the end of July despite Oscar’s absence, with current holder Uruguay without suspended talisman Luis Suarez, who will continue to serve his international ban for biting Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

The five-time World Cup champion has won Copa America eight times, eclipsed only by Uruguay (15) and Argentina (14).

Only four Brazil-based players were named in the squad, including veteran Robinho. The 31-year-old forward – on loan at Santos from Italian club AC Milan – was part of the team that won the tournament in 1997.

Liverpool midfielder Philippe Coutinho, who missed the World Cup, was selected alongside Oscar’s clubmates Filipe Luis and Willian.

Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho was preferred to Chelsea’s Ramires, while Barcelona star Neymar is one of four Spain-based players.

Thiago Silva, who like Oscar was named in the 2014 World Cup All-Star team, is one of three defenders from French champion Paris St. Germain.

Brazil’s opening game is against Peru on June 14, followed by Group C games against Colombia three days later and then Venezuela on June 21.
