The House of Representatives approved a bill extending the federal highway program for three months, giving Congress more time to negotiate an agreement on a longer term deal to pay for road, bridge and transit projects across the country.

The vote was 385-34, with one member voting present.

The measure also includes emergency money for the Department of Veterans Affairs, which is facing a budget shortfall this summer.

The Senate is expected to approve the three-month bill later this week, ahead of a deadline at the end of the month when the federal highway trust fund runs out of money.
