Kidnapped men were building an athletic stadium

CNN  —

Sixteen Turkish construction workers who were kidnapped earlier this month in Baghdad have been freed, the official Turkish Anadolu news agency reported Wednesday.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu said on Twitter that he had spoken to the men, who are now in the Turkish embassy in Baghdad.

The men were kidnapped Sept. 2 in the Sadr City neighborhood of eastern Baghdad, according to the Iraqi Interior Ministry.

The workers were building an athletic stadium, the ministry said.
