Bob Franken

Bob Franken is a national correspondent for CNN reporting from inside Washington, D.C., as well as around the country. Before this assignment, he was a congressional correspondent for the network, where his primary responsibilities included covering the legislative activities of Congress, in addition to key congressional hearings and investigations. Franken was CNN's principal correspondent for the network's coverage of the impeachment and trial of President Bill Clinton.

During 2003's Operation Iraqi Freedom, Franken was one of CNN's 18 embedded journalists who traveled with the military and reported from the frontlines. Franken provided latest news and information from his position with the Air Force. Additionally, Franken was on scene when seven U.S. POWs were released, providing CNN viewers with exclusive footage of the remarkable event via videophone.

During the 1996 campaign, Franken covered many of the candidates including, Clinton, Bob Dole, Pat Buchanan, Steve Forbes and Lamar Alexander. He was a floor reporter at the 1996 Republican and Democratic national conventions. He reported on the 1996 political battle for control of the Congress and the role of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.

Franken also covered the 1992 presidential campaigns and the confirmation hearings of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas. During the Persian Gulf War, Franken spent several weeks reporting on military action. He began his CNN career in 1986 as a general assignment correspondent.

Before joining CNN, Franken worked from 1983-1985 in the CBS Washington, D.C., Bureau as an assignment editor and producer. From 1981-1983 he worked for NBC in Pittsburgh and from 1970-1979, he was a reporter and anchor for Cleveland station WJKW-TV. He received an Emmy Award for his coverage of the 1978 Cleveland mayoral race. Franken began his journalism career in Marshfield, Wis., where he served as local news director for radio station WDLB.

Franken attended the University of Wisconsin in Madison.
