Josh Macabuag in Jozini

Josh Macabuag has travelled to Jozini, South Africa, where he will be working with the charity Engineers Without Borders (EWB) to build a much needed sports facility.

About the organization

While in Jozini, Josh will be working with Engineers Without Borders, an internationally based NGO, with operations in more than 35 countries. Through implementing sustainable building projects the organization aims to create a world where all people have access to the knowledge and resources with which to meet their basic human needs. Its actions address such areas as water supply and sanitation, food production and processing, housing and construction, energy, transportation and communication, income generation, and employment creation.

Josh helps ready the Jozini municipal swimming pool for opening day. The biggest problem is maintenance, and Josh hopes the municipality realize the need for the pool and will be driven to keep it open.

Josh talks his work on the roundabout pumps project in Jozini. These pumps are installed - free of cost - in areas where children play. The children turn these pumps, which then transport water into tanks directly from bore wells.

Josh visits a community that is using a ram pump to deliver water. The system has no running costs and does not use fossil fuels. The water hammer also requires very little maintenance.
