Former Illinois Sen. Carol Moseley Braun was the first African-American woman to serve in the upper chamber of Congress. Elected in 1992 and defeated for re-election in 1998, she then served as U.S. ambassador to New Zealand. She dropped her bid for the Democratic nomination on January 15, 2004.
