Democratic Presidential Caucuses
The first official election in the 2004 presidential election cycle is the Iowa caucuses, Monday, January 19. Of Iowa's 56 convention delegates, 45 are directly tied to the caucus results.

 Instead of releasing caucus vote totals, the Iowa Democratic Party releases a total indicating the number of delegates to the state convention each candidate will receive. The delegates at the state convention select delegates to the national convention in July.

• Exit polls are a survey of selected voters taken soon after they leave their voting place.
