Results: McCain wins S.C. Republican primary | Obama wins big in Democratic primary
  • Sen. John McCain won the January 19 Republican primary despite a strong showing by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee among the evangelical Christian voters who dominated turnout.
  • Former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson was in third, followed by former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney.
  • Sen. Barack Obama claimed a significant victory in the South Carolina Democratic primary on January 26, telling supporters "we are hungry for change."
  • The Illinois senator earned more than twice the vote that rival Sen. Hillary Clinton did, 55 percent to 27 percent, unofficial returns showed. Former Sen. John Edwards was third with 18 percent.

Primary Process

Each party will use a formula to determine how to allocate delegates to their national conventions based on the outcome of the vote.
