NEW YORK (CNN) -- "Rent," the Pulitzer Prize-winning play that celebrates artists and outcasts in New York's East Village, received 10 Tony Award nominations Monday, the most of any production.

"Bring in 'da Noise, Bring in 'da Funk," a dance musical starring Savion Glover, garnered nine nominations for the best of the 1995-96 Broadway season. The musical portrays a history of black America.

Tony Award winners will be announced June 2.

Jonathan Larson, the creator of "Rent," received two nominations -- for book and score of a musical. The 35-year-old Larson died in January before the show opened.

Both shows were nominated for best musical, along with two productions already have closed -- "Chronicle of a Death Foretold," based on the novel by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and "Swinging on a Star," a revue featuring the songs of lyricist Johnny Burke.

The two lavish musicals "Victor/Victoria" and "Big" were shut out from the best-musical category. However, Julie Andrews was nominated for her role in "Victor/Victoria."
