Remembering Kent State
Ohio university marks 30 years since shooting deaths of 4 students by National Guardsmen
(CNN) -- It was just after noon on Monday, May 4, 1970, when the shots rang out. Four Kent State University students were dead, killed by Ohio National Guardsmen sent to quell a student demonstration against the Vietnam War.
Thirty years later, the Ohio university is remembering the four
students -- Allison Krause, Jeffrey Miller, Sandra Scheuer and William
Schroeder -- with musical tributes, including a major new work by
the Cleveland Orchestra; a constitutional symposium; speeches by
New York Times columnist Anthony Lewis and Arun Gandhi, grandson
of Mohandas Gandhi; and a special Web site.
CNN.com has marked the anniversary with a special hourlong webcast, "Full Circle: Kent State 30 Years Later." The program was streamed live on Wednesday, May 3, and is available now as on-demand video. Hosted by CNN's Chris Askew, the assistant host of "TalkBack Live," the program takes a look at Kent State and other activist movements and features interviews with musician and antiwar activist Country Joe McDonald; Alan Canfora, who was among the students wounded at Kent State; Tiananmen Square protester Liu Gang; and youth activist Loren Finkelstein of the Global Action League..
A live interactive chat was hosted during the webcast that allowed users to post questions and discuss the topic.
