Joycelyn Askew traveled seven miles through New Orleans - - by boat, U-Haul and by foot -- to find her son, Quentin, at the city's convention center.
1. Tulane University
Joycelyn Green, a security officer at Tulane University, sets out from the school's gym to find her son Quentin. She travels by boat across 4-foot-deep-water to reach the campus' edge.
Already miles into her trip, Joycelyn stops at a friend's house, where the telephone is still working. After making several calls she finds out that her son is at the Convention Center. She hops a ride on the back of a U-Haul trailer to find him.
Joycelyn hears Quentin call out "Momma" as she reaches the intersection on Convention Center Boulevard and S. Diamond Street. They embraced and wept at the corner before seeking safety.
Joycelyn and Quentin decided to walk across the Crescent City Connection to reach their house in Algiers on the city's West Bank. Police turn them away, and they decide to head back to the Austerlitz Street address. On the way, they encounter sniper fire and a National Guardsman took aim at Quentin when the young man approached, seeking help for his hobbling mother.
