This photograph was shot August 1, 1998, in Warsaw's Powazki cemetery, at the spot known locally as "Dolinka Katynska," the Katyn Valley.
During the Cold War, communist authorities prosecuted those who spoke out about Soviet involvement in the Katyn massacre.
Friends and relatives of Katyn victims could only mourn publicly on officially sanctioned occasions. August 1, the day Poles mark the start of the Warsaw Uprising against the Nazis, also became a secret day of grief for Katyn.
