It was known in German as the Berliner Mauer, and globally as the Wall. But the barrier that separated West Berlin from East Berlin and adjacent parts of East Germany was more than a simple wall. Starting in August 1961, when East German soldiers divided the city with barbed wire, and until its fall in 1989, the Wall was expanded into a lethal no-man's land.
