Russian sub in U.S. waters

This "Juliette"-class submarine, number U484, was purchased by a Canadian company from the Russian military. It was then towed to Florida, where it was put on display in the port of St. Petersburg as a tourist attraction. Financial and logistical difficulties, however, forced the company that owns the sub to declare bankruptcy in March 1999.

With a length of 300 feet, this diesel-powered submarine carried four Shaddock anti-ship guided cruise missiles. Those weapons, which have a range of 950 miles and a top speed of Mach 1.1, could be fitted with either conventional or nuclear warheads. Twin missile launchers are located on the vessel's fore and aft.

The arrival of the U484 caused an immediate controversy in Florida. Some U.S. military veterans were offended by the presence of a vessel whose primary objective was to destroy U.S. aircraft carrier groups. Supporters say the submarine is a great educational tool.
