"The Twilight Zone"

Running until 1965, the original "Twilight Zone" was on the air through such seminal Cold War events as the U-2 incident, the Cuban Missile Crisis and John F. Kennedy's assassination. An anomaly for its time, this science fiction series dipped into the supernatural; unlike its contemporaries, the show forsook traditional tastes and values for ironic twists on controversial themes. In one Cold War-inspired episode, a bespectacled bank teller who'd much rather read than interact with others becomes the only person to survive a nuclear holocaust. That's fine with him ... until he breaks his glasses.
