Rules for the COLD WAR 'write-a-long'You must be over 18 to participate. 1) How to submit a chapter It's easy. Email your submission to CNNbooks@turner.com We'll review all the submissions and pick the best ones. Don't send snail mail, it won't count. In fact, we will not be accepting chapters by any means other than email. 2) Length Stick to a chapter, not a novel. Keep it around 750-900 words. If it's too long, it will not be considered as an eligible entry. 3) The chosen ones After the deadline for submission passes each week, CNN Interactive editors will choose the best eligible entries and post them on a polling template. We reserve the right to edit the chapters you submit as and how we see fit. Our readers will then pick the most superb scribe for each chapter. If your work is chosen, that's your time to shine, but please don't submit additional chapters since we want to give as many people as possible the best chance to contribute. 4) Languages Only English-language submissions will be accepted. We want to make sure we don't alter your original text by trying to translate it. 5) Don't blame us We aren't responsible for misdirected, lost, late or illegible entries, technical, hardware, or software failures of any kind, lost or unavailable network connections, or failed, incomplete, garbled or delayed computer transmissions or other errors or malfunctions of any kind which may limit a participant's ability to participate, including human error. False or deceptive submissions or acts will render all of that entrant's entries ineligible. One (1) submission per email address per week. 6) Be honest If you pretend to be someone else, like Tom Clancy, you're out of the Cold War novel-writing business. You must take credit for your own work and provide us with your first and last name. You could be the next Robert Ludlum, but you'd never get ahead using someone else's name or someone else's work. When you send a submission, you are verifying to us and promising that the text is the product of your toil and your inspiration and not your cutting and pasting skills. We are not responsible for the consequences if you attempt to pass off someone else's work as your own. 7) We own it and other legalese you should read By transmitting a chapter, entrants represent that they are 18 or older, the submissions are original works by them and that they do not violate the rights of any third parties or contain any obscene, defamatory, or libelous information or material. In addition, by submitting text, you hereby acknowledge and agree that CNN Interactive and its associated entities own the submission and shall have a royalty-free, perpetual, unrestricted, worldwide right (but not obligation) to: i) use, exploit, copy, sublicense, adapt, transmit, publicly perform or display the text submissions; and ii) sublicense to third parties the unrestricted right to exercise any of the foregoing rights granted with respect to the submission. The foregoing grants shall include the right to exploit the Cold War write-a-long submissions in the form of a novel or motion picture and to exploit, in any manner, any copyright, trademark, or servicemark embodied in such submissions under any relevant jurisdiction. Entrants acknowledge that they shall not be entitled to any compensation or right of approval in connection with CNN's exploitation of the foregoing rights. By transmitting a write-a-long submission, entrant also grants CNN Interactive and its associated entities the right to publish and use the entrant's name and the entrant also releases, holds harmless and indemnifies CNN Interactive and its associated entities from any and all claims or actions of any kind whatsoever arising from any injuries, damages, or losses to person or property which occur as a result of or in connection with your entry in the write-a-long. We reserve the right to terminate the write-a-long at any time, for any reason and without notice. 8) The End. At some time we will decide to end the write-a-long and deem our novel "finished". © 1998 Cable News Network, Inc. A Time Warner Company. All rights reserved. |
