September 1968 -- Moon Orbital Though never announcing the intent of sending a cosmonaut to the moon, the Soviet Union sent many unmanned spacecraft to orbit, land on and explore the lunar surface. Zond 5 became the first craft to successfully orbit the moon and return to Earth. Multiple Zond missions through 1970 were used to test the logistics for a manned mission to the moon.
