Brezhnev-Kissinger talks - The Kremlin, March 25, 1974
In March 1974, two years after the signing of the SALT 1 treaty, negotiations continued to reduce the threat of nuclear war.

The following are excerpts of transcripts of discussions between U.S. Secretary of State Henry Kissinger and Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev. They were recently uncovered and published in "The Kissinger Transcripts" by William Burr.

 
 
 
Nixon speech on Watergate - April 30, 1973

On June 17, 1972, two weeks after President Nixon returned from Moscow, five men were arrested for breaking into the Democratic Party Headquarters in the Watergate building in Washington. The men worked for CREEP -- the Committee for the Re-Election of the President.

The scandal remained hidden through the 1972 presidential elections. But beginning in February 1973, the Senate began investigations into the crimes.

Nixon's special counsel, John Dean, was soon fired and on April 30, 1973, two of Nixon's associates resigned. The following speech was Nixon's announcement of these resignations and his public claim of innocence.

Castro-Honecker Meeting on Africa
In April 1977, Fidel Castro met with East German leader Erich Honecker to discuss socialist movements in Africa. Castro had recently visited countries in Africa and describes to Honecher what he saw on his visit.

In this document, Castro goes into great detail on the situations of African allies, citing the positive and negative situations and personalities in Angola, Zimbabwe, Tanzania and Zambia among others.

 
 
 
Cuba-Angola letters, 1975
The following 1975 documents reveal the depth of Cuban involvement in Africa. The first is a letter from the leader of the MPLA, Agostinho Neto, specifying the assistance he requires from his ally, Cuba.

The second is a letter from a Cuban official describing his meetings with Neto to the Cuban minister of the armed forces, Raul Castro.

CIA Guide on Coup Plotting in Chile
This October 1970 cable is from CIA Deputy Director of Plans Thomas Karamessines to Henry Hecksher, the CIA station chief in Santiago, Chile. It purportedly contains orders from National Security Adviser Henry Kissinger to overthrow Allende and notes that the American ambassador in Chile has not been told of the plot.
 
 
CIA Manual: Psych-Ops in Guerrilla Warfare
In the early 1980's, Nicaragua faced constant guerrilla warfare between the leftist Sandinista government and the Contra rebels. The U.S. government - in its fight to stop the spread of communism in the Western Hemisphere - secretly supported the Contra guerrillas with weapons and training.

This document contains excerpts of an instruction manual provided by the CIA for guerrilla fighters. It includes detailed methods of gaining support through propaganda and selective violence.
