LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Some developments in the Elian Gonzalez case. CNN's Susan Candiotti is in Miami and joins us now with that -- Susan.
SUSAN CANDIOTTI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Lou, this is a very compelling development, the latest one in this human drama, a standoff between the Florida relatives of 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez and the two grandmothers who are in Washington trying to see their grandson.
We have just learned from the U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service that the INS has sent a letter to the attorneys representing the Florida relatives here, compelling them, now, to arrange a meeting between the two grandmothers and the little boy in a neutral setting outside this home.
INS, and you will recall that the relatives have been adamant against allowing that to happen -- a meeting outside of home. Well, now the INS is ordering such a meeting to take place at 4:00 Wednesday afternoon at the Miami Beach home of Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin, who is president of the Roman Catholic Barry University here in Miami.
Furthermore, INS says that failure of the attorneys to respond to this order by INS by 3:30 this afternoon may affect the temporary parole that has been issued to 6-year-old Elian Gonzalez, those are the conditions under which he has been allowed into this country. You will recall, e was first allowed in because of his medical condition. So they are making this a condition of him being allowed to stay in the United States.
So, next step, we will now find out what the response will be from the attorneys in this very, very interesting development -- Lou.
WATERS: All right, Susan Candiotti in Miami.
