Weiss: 12 Dead, Over 100 Injured in South Georgia Tornadoes

Aired February 14, 2000 - 8:06 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: We'll get more now on that tornado, the aftermath in South Georgia right now. We're joined by Bud -- Buzz Weiss, rather, who is with the Georgia Emergency Management Agency.

Mr. Weiss, can you give us a picture of how things stand right now?

BUZZ WEISS, GEORGIA EMERGENCY MGMT.: Well, at this point the confirmed fatalities still appear to be standing at a dozen. We have at least 100 injuries, and of course damage appears to be rather extensive. This is a rural area, but also it's our understanding that some of the more populated areas were directly affected. So, as -- with daybreak we're able to see a lot more, and we're focusing right now on getting attention to the people who have been injured and locating them, making sure they're all accounted for, and then we'll take a look at the damage assessments and continue to try to get the situation under control.

HARRIS: You say that damage is extensive. Have you had a chance yet to see how widespread it is?

WEISS: At this point we're still -- still surveying that. We don't have any sense of how -- how long the track of this particular tornado was or whether there were multiple tornadoes; that's something we're still -- still trying to look at, and we'll be talking with the weather service to get some sort of a sense of how extensive this was and how strong a tornado it was.

HARRIS: Do you have any idea of whether or not people there had adequate warning?

WEISS: At this time we don't know what the warning situation was. I know that there were a number of severe weather advisories issued, issued last evening, but in terms of this particular area I don't have any information on what sort of warnings may have been -- may have been issued by weather service.

HARRIS: All right, Buzz Weiss of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, we thank you much.
