Gunmen Wounds Five After Fireman and Police Arrive at Burning House

Aired March 8, 2000 - 2:57 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DONNA KELLEY, CNN ANCHOR: We're just getting more information for you this afternoon: Memphis, Tennessee, there was a house that was on fire, and when firemen and people went to check on it and to try to take care of the situation, we have five people who apparently were shot, and according to the police director, critically or fatally injured this afternoon. That includes a deputy, two firemen, a suspect and an unknown person. Apparently, there's a woman who was apparently a bystander who has been taken to the hospital for treatment, according to some reports as well.

There was a fire that these folks went to go to. The firefighters arrived to put out the fire, and according to WMC-TV, were ambushed by a man who came out of the garage shooting.

They've been trying to confirm whether or not somebody is still in the house, this TV station, and we'll listen to more of their coverage from WMC.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: You can see there's blood on my door where she...

(CROSSTALK)

YVETTE MENA (ph), WMC-TV REPORTER: There's blood on your door?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

MENA: Is that the lady that got shot?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, yes, and there's blood down there too.

I was just afraid. I wanted to help her, but I was afraid. So...

MENA: What did she look like? I mean, what (UNINTELLIGIBLE)?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes, she was bleeding like on the side of her face. And I couldn't tell if she had been shot or she was in a wreck, you know, so...

MENA: (UNINTELLIGIBLE) happen?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Couldn't tell, you know, how -- serious it was, yes. So...

MENA: Were the bullets inside your house?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, actually, they stopped in our kitchen wall, and so we haven't actually found any bullets. But there was just glass, you know -- I'm just glad I wasn't standing in front of the window when they went through there.

MENA: How long have you been living here?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Seven years.

MENA: Seven years?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Yes.

MENA: What do you make of all of this?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Well, the first couple of years we lived here somebody tried to kick our front door in. So you know, I told my husband, I said maybe we need to think about moving, and he said that...

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: All right. Well, there we heard the quote from the witness. This was the lady who lived next door who was afraid when the woman who had been shot, who was a passerby, came looking for help. Eventually you see she did get help. We had some video of her being loaded on to an ambulance. And Janice Broach reported she has arrived at the med and is being treated there, and that's been some time now.

So the woman did receive some treatment. But you saw the five bullet holes through the window during that interview. That was Action News 5. Yvette Mena talking with that neighbor. And that was an indication of just how dangerous this scene was during the noon hour today.

We saw those five bullet holes, rifle gun holes, through the window of that house, and fortunately, that woman and -- was not at home at the time. She had left or she was about to leave for work, it's our understanding. She was getting ready and about to leave for work when the neighbor came up and the shots were fired. And fortunately, the bullets didn't hit anybody inside that house, apparently lodged, as Yvette Mena reported, somewhere in the kitchen there.

So those bullet holes give you a very graphic illustration of just how bloody and dangerous this scene has been here in southeast Shelby County.

A corner house there, a corner lot at Bay Hollow and Germantown Road, fast-growing southeast Shelby County, where we see a Shelby County deputy working on the head of that SUV. And Memphis Fire Department, Memphis Police Department investigators all trying to figure out exactly what happened at this house.

The report of a fire came in during the noon hour. Memphis firefighters responded. As you see, the house is still smoldering.

Someone emerged from the garage when the firefighters showed up saying, Get away! Get away! The man had a long gun, and he opened fire on two Memphis firefighters. Action News 5 Janice Broach has been monitoring the situation at the med.

KELLEY: So some more information for us there from television station WMC this afternoon. What we know around Memphis, Tennessee, firefighters came to the scene of a house on fire, and according to WMC, when they got there to put out the fire, they were ambushed by a man who came out of the garage shooting.

We have five people, according to the police director, who have been critically or fatally injured on the scene. That would include a deputy, two firemen, a suspect and an unknown person.

We will continue to follow the story here on CNN and bring you the information we get this afternoon.
