Stock Markets Slide Toward Closing Bell

Aired April 14, 2000 - 3:44 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BOBBIE BATTISTA, CNN ANCHOR: We'll continue our discussion here in just a moment, but the stock market continues its incredible slide today, down over 600 points at this time, 684.

Let's check in with Jan Hopkins on the exchange -- Jan.

JAN HOPKINS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thanks, Bobbie.

We have the worst point loss ever for the Dow Jones industrial average at this point, down 658 points, a decline of about 6 percent. The Nasdaq is even worse. The Nasdaq is down 384 points. That is the worst point drop ever for the Nasdaq and is the second-worst percentage loss for the Nasdaq. That index is down 10 percent today. It has been down every day this week. And this sell-off comes on very heavy volume.

We will wrap up the day in the market at the close. Gail Dudack, market strategist, will be with us. We'll have special reports, and we'll also be talking with the Treasury secretary, Lawrence Summers. That's at the of the hour on "STREET SWEEP."

Bobbie, back to you.

BATTISTA: Jan, should -- how worried should we be, I guess is the question -- Is Jan still there?

HOPKINS: Well, I mean, remember, in the crash of 1987 we were down 20 percent in one day, so this doesn't compare in terms of percentage moves in a day, but the Nasdaq is down 30 percent from the high. You put it in perspective, though, the Nasdaq has run up something like 300 percent over the last two years. So if you got in in the beginning, this is a small hiccup. If you got in the last couple of weeks, you're really hurting. That's how you put it in perspective -- Bobbie.

BATTISTA: OK, Jan Hopkins, thanks once again for that update. Again, "STREET SWEEP" at the top of the hour will have all the ugly details for you about this day on Wall Street.
