At-Large Shooting Suspect's Sons Discuss 'False Accusations' Leveled Against Father by Lincoln Park Tenants

Aired April 18, 2000 - 2:32 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: An update now on the still unfolding shooting spree in suburban Detroit. A gunman is on the loose inside the Lincoln Park Tower, a home for the elderly. At least two people are dead, six wounded in the gunfire. The shooter reportedly is a resident who grew angry after other tenants complained about his behavior. Police say the gunman is roaming from apartment to apartment now sporadically firing shots. Shots have been fired out of apartment windows onto the streets around the Lincoln Park establishment.

The suspect has been identified tentatively as Kenneth Miller (ph), a retired country music singer and guitar player.

And within the last few minutes a reporter for WXYZ television in Detroit interviewed the alleged shooter's two sons.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: There are some false accusations against him, that's all I know. You know, they're backing him in a corner.

UNIDENTIFIED WXYZ REPORTER: False accusations by people in the building?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Right, right from the other tenants I guess.

WXYZ REPORTER: And has he ever had any problem in the past, was he ever diagnosed for anything at other hospitals?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That I don't know, you know. He's always been a kind, loving man. He'd always come to family functions, we are a close family, and for something like this to happen is unbelievable, I don't know why. They tried to kick him out of the place where he lives and that's all he has, you know.

WXYZ REPORTER: Why did they try to kick him out?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: I don't know, like I said, false accusations is all I know. It's all hearsay. But, you know, somebody accusing him of something he didn't do, you know, and I know there was a petition on his side that stated that he's been nothing but a great man, a friendly guy and gave rides to other tenants in the building that needed rides and, you know, for this to happen is just unbelievable.

WXYZ REPORTER: What kind of gun did he have? or guns?

(END VIDEO CLIP)

WATERS: That was the son, Kenneth Miller Jr., the son of Kenneth Miller Sr., the man police believe is responsible for the shootings at the Lincoln Park Tower, the home for the elderly. He is still on the loose, police have not yet been able to get him out. We will continue following the story.
