Two Aircraft Reportedly Collide Over Boca Raton, Florida

Aired June 23, 2000 - 12:34 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN ANCHOR: We want to show you some pictures from Boca Raton, Florida where two aircraft collided this morning near the city. We are told that one of the aircraft hit a housing complex as it fell, and we have seen pictures of firefighters dousing the wreckage there.

According to some of the eyewitnesses who were quoted by the Associated Press, it appeared that the two collided near a golf course. One of the aircraft may have been a helicopter, according to those eyewitnesses. And then, according to one of them, the aircraft fell separately. At this point, we are not sure if the wreckage of both has been found.

Right now, you're looking at some pictures from our affiliate WSVN of what is clearly plane wreckage on the ground.

We don't know much about these aircraft at this point. According to the Associated Press, one of them is said to be a Lear 55. That's a twin-engine jet. We have no idea how many people might have been aboard these aircraft, where they might have been taking off from or where they might have been going. Right now, you see those firefighters dousing the wreckage. Apparently there was fire when the plane came down.

We will keep following this story for you. We're going to bring you more information as soon as it becomes available us to.
