ANDRIA HALL, CNN ANCHOR: Let's go live now to Philadelphia, where Philadelphia Police Chief John Timoney is standing in the microphone to make a statement.
(JOINED IN PROGRESS)
JOHN TIMONEY, PHILADELPHIA POLICE CHIEF: Get back to you on that in a second.
As far as an update, I'm going will introduce you to the homicide captain, Jim Brady, who will you an update with regard to charges, and the end of the investigation, vis-a-vis Mr. Hayes, then will you what we have on the internal affairs investigation.
So, Captain Brady.
QUESTION: Identify yourself please.
CAPT. JAMES BRADY, PHILADELPHIA POLICE: Captain James Brady of the homicide unit. As you may or may not know, there were a number of charges filed earlier this morning, and without getting real specific, they include auto theft, two counts of attempted murder, assault, recklessly endangering. However, further investigation reveals that if both crime scenes, at 17 and Francis, where the officer was shot, and at 26 and Oxford, where two officers were injured. If both those scenes we recover evidence which indicates that the perpetrator, in this case, is involved in other criminal activity. We believe that he's involved on two robberies, on the 11th of July and an additional robbery earlier that morning, 7:12, hours before the -- or about 12 hours before the officer is shot. So there will be additional charges filed in the very near future, which include three additional purse snatch robberies as a result of evidence recovered at both of those crime scenes.
QUESTION: Captain, can you give us profile of who this guy is, what's his background?
BRADY: His name is Thomas Jones, age 30. It's 1400 North Hollywood. We can't get into his criminal background, except to say that he's no stranger to police, and he's someone that we're looking at for additional crimes. Besides the three robberies that I alluded to, there's also other issues and other evidence that we've uncovered, and we believe that besides these three robberies that I just spoke about, there will be additional charges down the road. But it's a complicated investigation, there's still yet a lot of work to be done, but I should think in the next couple of days, besides these three additional charges of robbery, there will be more charges also filed against Mr. Jones.
QUESTION: The gun -- have you recovered one?
BRADY: No, we have not recovered a gun.
QUESTION: What's the status are you searching for it? What are you doing? Do you believe that he actually had one?
BRADY: We're still looking for a gun. We have independent civilian witnesses who say they see the perpetrator with a gun.
QUESTION: Did he have a service revolver, do you believe.
BRADY: We don't know what type of gun he had.
QUESTION: Where did witnesses place him with a gun?
BRADY: All the officers guns have been accounted for. We don't have any missing guns.
