Shots Fired at Seattle School, Police Look For Student Gunman

Aired July 17, 2000 - 2:41 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: Breaking news story that we just told you about a few moments ago. We have live pictures from our CNN affiliate KIRO in Seattle. This is the A.W. Dimmitt Middle School in the Renton area of south Seattle. Evidently, a student fired a gun inside the building's cafeteria. No one was injured.

King County sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the school after receiving the report of a student with a gun. It happened about 10:57 a.m., that's 1:57 Eastern Time. The students inside the building were evacuated. As you can see now, things look pretty calm in the area. Police say they were searching for the suspect who fled from the cafeteria. Evidently, that student is still at large.

There we go. There we have some shots of some police officers that are obviously securing the area, making sure that the students are safe. Still looking for the other student that fired a gun and fled the school.

We will continue to bring you more on this story as it develops. There was a summer-school session going on at the school and that is when it happened during that summer school session. Once again, no one has been injured. Police are still looking for the student that has fled from the scene of A.W. Dimmitt Middle School in the Renton area of south Seattle.

We'll bring you more as the story develops. We'll be right back after this break.
