Dick Cheney Headed to Austin, Texas for Formal Veep Announcement

Aired July 25, 2000 - 10:21 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Dick Cheney outside of his home now in central Texas. We had expected and anticipated Dick Cheney to emerge at some point. We saw his wife come out a few hours ago going for coffee. That was the latest report we had. And here is his dark sedan sitting in his driveway there.

Charles Zewe also there live with us there this morning. Charles been giving us updates just about every 15 to 20 minutes or so.

Charles, are you on the line with us right now?

Apparently not, but there is a car emerging from there. We will probably anticipate a few reporters questions being thrown inside this car. We'll stop and listen and see what we can hear, if anything.

CHARLES ZEWE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Bill?

HEMMER: Yes, Charles.

ZEWE: You can see Dick Cheney driving himself off to the airport, Mrs. Cheney in the front city, refusing questions, in the car ready to go to Austin. He's obviously on his way to Love Field. I doubt he's going to drive himself all the way to Austin, which, if he chose to do, would be about a three-hour run down to the capital. That is, of course, obeying the speed limits in Texas.

He is declining everything. He's saying nothing to anyone as he drives off, Dick Cheney, wife Lynne and daughter Liz in the back seat there, on his way, presumably, to Love Field here in Dallas where he'll board what will likely be a charter plane for the quick trip, 35 to 40 minutes, down to Austin where he'll, doubtless, meet with Governor Bush, and before that 2:00 p.m. Central time, 3:00 p.m. Eastern time rally at the University of Texas this afternoon.

This has been something that has been expected all weekend now. Mr. Cheney has been -- it's been a badly kept secret ever since it leaked out on Friday afternoon that he had gone to Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

We need to get out of the street here because there's about to be a mad rush of reporters taking off after him...

HEMMER: Get safe. ZEWE: ... all the way over to Love Field.

Anyway, it's been a badly kept secret since he changed his voter registration on Friday, underwent the rigorous health exam at George Washington Hospital in Washington, and then came back here. He, of course, telling -- you can see people taking off after Cheney right there.

All right, that's the scene from Dallas right now, Cheney on his way to the airport and to Austin.

Charles Zewe, CNN, live, Dallas.

HEMMER: Stay, intrepid, Charles. And stay out of the street.

ZEWE: Indeed.

HEMMER: OK, Charles Zewe live in Dallas. Again, we'll pick things up with Dick Cheney once he arrives in Austin with the Texas governor later tonight.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Beginning of a new life for them. We reported earlier that Mrs. Cheney went out for coffee. Now the world can see that the Cheneys keep their car very clean.

HEMMER: Right, indeed.

KAGAN: Important to do in case you get a vice presidential nod.

HEMMER: There you go.

KAGAN: That rally, which is leading up -- which is what this is all leading up to -- 3:00 p.m. Eastern. You're going to see it live here on CNN. That's 12:00 Pacific.
