| Breaking NewsHundreds of Protesters Attempt to Set Fire to National Palace Fence in Lima, PeruAired July 28, 2000 - 2:22 p.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. LOU WATERS. CNN ANCHOR: Now we are going to flesh out that story going on in Lima, Peru, where violent protests are taking place in front of the Congressional building there, and also our CNN correspondent Harris Whitbeck is there to tell us what's going on. HARRIS WHITBECK, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Lou. Actually we're at the Plaza de Armas, where the National Palace is located, and where hundreds of protesters continue trying to set fire to the main fence there at the National Palace. You can see, now, that there, obviously, firemen or somebody from inside are using hoses to put that fire out. Tear gas canisters have been fired to try to contain these protesters that arrived here at this particular plaza about maybe half an hour ago, after the police lifted a cordon that they had established around this main plaza in Lima. They have not shown themselves but they certainly have been firing tear gas canisters from afar -- Lou. WATERS: All right, Harris Whitbeck, keeping track of the situation in Lima, Peru today.
