Two Dead After University of Arkansas ShootingAired August 28, 2000 - 3:03 p.m. ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We'll be back to you in just a moment, Bobbie.
We have been reporting about a shooting at Kimpel Hall on the University of Arkansas campus behind a locked door. We now have on the line, Jay Nickle, University of Arkansas spokesman. I hope, Mr. Nickle, you can tell us what happened.
JAY NICKLE, UNIV. OF ARKANSAS SPOKESMAN: OK, well, as far as what I know now, is that there has been actually three gunshots that had went off which is in the building which is called Kimpel Hall, which is I guess in the southeast part of, I guess, up here actually on campus. And we had been told -- I can't say that this is what we would say officially from actually our office here, but we had been told from the U. of A. police department that there have been two confirmed fatalities. But you know, once again that doesn't come from here, but that's what we have been told from the UAPD.
WATERS: Two fatalities, what we've been reporting is that this was a locked door, shots were fired behind the locked door. Can we assume from what you told us this is apparently a murder-suicide?
NICKLE: Well, that is -- I mean, that's actually what it sounds like, but once again, I don't have an official information, but that is what it does sound like to me, yes.
WATERS: All right, Jay Nickle, University of Arkansas spokesman. The three shots were fired in Kimpel Hall, which houses many faculty offices and some student activities. We had wondered about a threat to other people. Apparently, that threat has ended with the discovery of two bodies, according to Jay Nickle, who was told that by the University of Arkansas police.
More on the story throughout the day as we know more.
