Tanker Still Burning in Fort Worth, Texas After Weekend ExplosionAired October 24, 2000 - 10:00 a.m. ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: We are continuing to watch this latest story out of Fort Worth, Texas. It appears to be something that we're still trying to figure out ourselves.
Basically, on Sunday, a huge tanker exploded there carrying about 8,000 gallons of liquid propane. Since that time, that fire appears to be burning again today about 48 hours later. These are pictures from our affiliate out of Fort Worth and you can see the morning sky there has been darkened and blackened from the smoke in the air there.
It is reported again this fire was burning yesterday, on Monday, as well.
Now, again, the tanker exploded on Sunday. An 18-wheeler was transferring a load of propane at the time. This apparently on an onramp to the freeway, or quite close to it anyway. Witnesses say a line exploded and the tanker caught fire, and then a second larger blast took place after that.
We're watching it because a number of people have been evacuated from the area there, a number of people who live in homes near there, so we'll let you know what we learn out of Fort Worth throughout the morning here.
But, again, what we know right now, that fire continues to burn and the skies, indeed, can show evidence of that based on the smoke and the black smoke we're seeing today.
We'll watch it. More updates coming up just a bit here shortly.
