Hostage Situation Ends Safely in Arizona Elementary School

Aired October 24, 2000 - 3:34 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Lou Waters again here at CNN Center. The emergency situation at Pioneer High School out in Glendale, the suburban Phoenix elementary school. That crisis continues now. About all that's new that we know is that the gunman, who is holding a teacher, apparently inside a portable classroom, is a former student, not necessarily an 8th grader, but the teacher is an 8th grade teacher.

(AUDIO GAP)

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: ... possibly between the ages of 13 and 14. He is in custody right now with police. Back to you, Julie.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Dean, I just have a quick question: is that going to change now where parents come to pick up their children up? Is the plan still to take them to Cactus High School, or is everything OK?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That's right. I am being told by -- from Matt Brown (ph) and other people that the students are being transferred to Cactus High School, and so parents, obviously, that are very concerned and want to pick up their children need to go to Cactus High School, because as you can see, there is a lot of traffic in this area. There is really no way to get in and out. And so, parents need to go to Cactus High School, and that's where they'll be able to pick up their students.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: All right, they're going to stick with that plan. That's obviously a crime scene and it's a lot of confusion, and they still have a lot of work out there. So definitely if you are a parent and you have a child, go on to Cactus High School. All right, thank you very much, Dean.

And I am sorry, Nicole. Can you tell me, repeat that?

WATERS: OK, KPNX reporting -- maybe my producer can tell me, did we understand? The hostage situation has ended. At last report, we had heard that there was just a gunman and an 8th grade teacher inside a portable classroom being talked out of the situation by Phoenix police. That apparently has been successful. All of the students are safe. Nobody was hurt.

That's our report. I am Lou Waters at CNN Center.
