Election 2000: Recount That Will Decide Presidential Election Underway in FloridaAired November 8, 2000 - 9:31 a.m. ET
THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.
DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: There is a recount underway in the state of Florida.
For the latest on that, let's bring in CNN's Mark Potter who is in Miami this morning -- Mark.
MARK POTTER, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hi, Daryn. We're waiting for details on the recount; we expect to hear those shortly from the division of elections in Tallahassee. We're told that they'll have a statement within a half hour explaining how, when, where and how long this is going to take -- all those details we've been waiting for we hope to have for you shortly.
In the meantime, we're also dealing with an issue up in the Palm Beach area where some voters have claimed that the voting procedure up there is confusing and some have complained -- a considerable number have complained -- that they may have voted the wrong way; voted for a candidate that they didn't choose. They intended to vote for Vice President Gore and instead got Pat Buchanan by mistake.
And this is how they say it happened: If you can see here, this is the ballot. This is a line, you punch right here if you want George W. Bush; here if you want Al Gore; in the middle if you want Pat Buchanan. And those who say that this is difficult complain that Al Gore is the second name on this side, but the third hole down. And for some people that proved confusing and they're concerned that, inadvertently, they voted for pat Buchanan when they wanted to vote democratic and they've complained about that.
Now, state officials say that this is not an issue of voter fraud. It's a mechanical problem and they're going to look into it; and campaign officials also say that they're going to look into it. We don't know how that's going to turn out, but this is not part of the recount, it's a separate issue. The recount could take place today and the attorney general of Florida said it could be done within a day. And, again, we'll have those details, hopefully soon from the division of elections, and when we get that information we'll share it with everybody just as soon as we can.
This is Mark Potter CNN, reporting live from Miami.
KAGAN: Mark, thank you very much. Congressman Robert Wexler represents that area where those ballots have that problem. He should be our guest any minute now and hopefully we'll get some more information about the discrepancy between the votes for Al Gore an Pat Buchanan. Also, the recount currently taking place in the state of Florida.
BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Last night our Web site cnn.com took a record number of visits. We anticipate throughout the day today that record may continue. For more information on last night, as always, cnn.com, the front page right there. All the information you need. A bit later, inside cnn.com/election2000.
We're back with more after this here on CNN's MORNING NEWS.
