The Florida Recount: Bush Camp Rebuffs Democrat's Suggestion That Florida Secretary of State Recuse Herself

Aired November 15, 2000 - 2:38 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: Perhaps no one's more anxious to have this election decided than George W. Bush and Al Gore, one of whom will become our 43rd president.

So let's turn now to CNN's Jeanne Meserve, she is still with the Bush campaign in Austin -- Jeanne.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Natalie, a couple of dozen demonstrators left here outside of the governor's mansion today, here at the request of the Texas state Republican Party. They've been chanting, "Bush won! Bush won!" Of course, we don't know if that actually is the election result, and we may not know for days to come.

It's been a pretty low-octane day here in Austin. The governor has laid low -- the governor himself is at his ranch, about two hours away. We are told, however, that Dick Cheney, his running mate, will be making an appearance at headquarters later today and meet and greet the staff and thank them for their continuing support.

A couple of tidbits here: we do know that the Bush campaign has intervened in that legal action taken by Secretary of State Katherine Harris down in Florida. She is asking for a consolidation of all of those legal actions being taken down there, that they be sent to a trial court in Tallahassee; also asking for a halt to the hand recounts. An end of the recounts, of course, the thing the Bush campaign most wants to see. They're back in court in Atlanta today. You may remember that, on Monday, they tried to get an injunction to stop all of the hand recounting in Florida. They were unsuccessful getting that; now they are appealing that in Atlanta.

One other note: Secretary of State Katherine Harris, who I mentioned earlier, has come under a lot of fire from Democrats because of her ties to the Bush family and the Bush campaign. Minority leader Tom Daschle suggested today that, perhaps, because of her ties she should recuse herself from matters relating to this election. The Bush campaign very much taking issue with that, saying she is an elected official of the state of Florida and is carrying out the laws of Florida. And suggested, well, if she shouldn't be involved in this, maybe all those local election officials with democratic ties shouldn't be involved either.

Natalie, back to you.

ALLEN: Oh boy; all right, and it goes on. Thank you, Jeanne Meserve in Austin.
