GOP V.P. Candidate Dick Cheney Resting Comfortably After Suffering Chest Pains

Aired November 22, 2000 - 7:47 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: We do want to now confirm we do know that Dick Cheney, vice presidential running mate of George W. Bush, has been hospitalized with chest pains.

We want to go Austin, Texas now and CNN's national correspondent Tony Clark for more on this breaking story -- Tony.

TONY CLARK, CNN NATIONAL CORRESPONDENT: Carol, it's all happening very fast. At this point, we haven't had a chance to hear from the campaign officials here in Austin. But you know it's just another blow in a series of blows.

As I mentioned earlier this morning, the supreme court decision yesterday, late last night, was one of the lowest ebbs that this campaign has had since the state of Florida was taken away from it in the early morning hours after the election. And now this, another blow to the campaign. We don't know at this point how serious at all these chest pains are, but I think it goes to point up the stress that is -- all of the campaign feels in this.

You know, for the last few days we've been watching Gov. Bush go to the office and carry on business as if things are normal, but it is very obvious that things are not normal. There is a lot of stress, a lot of anxiety here.

And so at this point, Carol, we're simply waiting to get more information on Secretary Cheney and his condition, how serious or not serious it is and the reaction from here with the Bush campaign in Austin -- Carol.

LIN: All right, and adding to the story, Tony, we want to say that he was admitted to the hospital at 6:08 local time, I think your time, and that it was only as a precaution just in case he might have had a heart attack. But he was only complaining of chest pains so we don't want to imply that this might be more serious than it is. But clearly a stressful time for the campaign.

Have you heard any sort of official reaction from the Bush campaign in terms of how this might change their schedule today?

CLARK: Well, you know, so much of that is being handled by lawyers and it is not -- I think it is doubtful that it will change any of the legal maneuvering at all. But I think what it does do, as I say, is it shows the stress that all of the participants in this ballot box battle are under, and this is just the latest at that.

Again, it's still very early here in Austin and no official word from the campaign.

LIN: All right, thank you very much Tony Clark with the latest reaction out of Austin, Texas.

We've got more news now with Linda.

LINDA STOUFFER, CNN ANCHOR: That's right, Carol. We are just beginning to get some more details on this. Again, I mentioned that Dick Cheney had a history of heart problems, but we are hearing some reports from what they are finding out at the hospital. Again, he was reporting chest and shoulder discomfort, but the latest word now is that he is now comfortable.

Here are some results that we're hearing about. His EKG apparently shows no change and we're also hearing that some of his blood work has come back. That shows that his cardiac enzymes are normal.

Again, that result from the hospital. He is apparently still in George Washington Hospital.

We are going to take a quick break here on CNN EARLY EDITION. Of course we will keep you up-to-date with the latest word. Republican vice presidential candidate Dick Cheney is hospitalized at George Washington Hospital. We will bring you more as we get it.
