Seven Reported Dead in Massachusetts Office Shooting

Aired December 26, 2000 - 1:01 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We have a story that is breaking in Wakefield, Massachusetts. Perhaps you know the place. It's about 10 miles outside of Boston. Details are sketchy, as we usually say when the story first breaks. Details are coming into us little by little.

Here's what we know: At this office building, which is known as Foundry Street Garage in Wakefield, there has been a shooting. Many people have been shot, we're told. We don't know how many, we don't know how bad. We do know there is a spokes -- a suspect in custody, according to a spokeswoman with the Massachusetts State Police.

Daryn Kagan is checking things out with our affiliate desk. Most of the information we're getting now, Daryn, is from our affiliates in the Boston area. What are they telling us?

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Well, let's go ahead and check in with Barb Frank. She's our vice president of affiliate relations. Barb on the phone.

Can you take a break? How many affiliate stations do we have working on this right now?

BARB FRANK, CNN V.P., OF AFFILIATE RELATIONS: Right now we have about five affiliate stations working on it. Our affiliates are telling us police on the ground are saying seven dead. We're getting aerials and various ground shots from our affiliates, and the SWAT teams are searching the building.

KAGAN: Have you heard anything about any custodies in suspect from our affiliates?

FRANK: Our affiliates are saying one custody -- one suspect is in custody, but we have not been able to confirm that yet.

KAGAN: And have they been able to come up with any other information about who might have done this or who they're looking for?

FRANK: Officially not, no. They're thinking possibly a disgruntled employee, but we have not confirmed that.

KAGAN: And once again, just to look at our resources, we have five affiliate -- that's five different stations -- in the Boston area that we can call on for the latest information.

FRANK: Absolutely. And we're getting them all in now.

KAGAN: OK, let you get back to work.

Lou, back to you.

WATERS: OK, Daryn.

And if you're familiar with the area, this office complex we're telling you about is a converted factory on Foundry Road in Wakefield, about 10 miles outside of Boston. It's known as Harvard Mills. What went on there today, this day after Christmas, we still don't know. We don't know who the suspect is, if there is more than one suspect, and who the victims are.

We have heard that there are several ambulances -- plural -- on scene. Police are there, helicopter hovers overhead. And as you heard, our affiliates are working the story. As soon as we know more, we'll tell you more.

I guess, Daryn, you know more.

KAGAN: Well, Lou, while you're doing that, I'm able to look through our computer system -- it is very extensive -- and check a number of different sources. I'm checking the state wires from Massachusetts. They're talking a lot of what we are hearing from our affiliates, very similar, that SWAT teams are fanning the building, they are searching for other suspects. Once again, you heard Barb Frank report that our affiliates are reporting that one suspect could be in custody and as many as seven people could be dead in this shooting.

Also reporting, I see here on the wires, at least three ambulances parked outside the building. No signs so far of any victims removed.

We're going to call on one of those affiliates. Right now let's go ahead and listen in to our affiliate WCVB.

(JOINED IN PROGRESS)

SUSAN WORNICK, WCVB-TV ANCHOR: ... live with a complete wrap-up and all the day's news at News Center 5 at 5:00 this afternoon. This has been a special report. I'm Susan Wornick.

KAGAN: All right, well, we just got at the very end of that special report. Again, that's just one of five affiliates we have in the Boston area converging on the scene in Boston, where a number of people, as has been reported from our affiliates -- also the Associated Press -- that a number of people have been killed in a shooting at this office building in the Wakefield area.

WHGH, our affiliate, reporting that this is at a complex -- and I'm sure Lou mentioned this -- called Harvard Mills. This is a -- it used to be a factory and now it's an office complex.

Back to Lou. WATERS: OK, so we will continue following that story. As soon as we know more, we'll pass it along to you.
