Texas Law Enforcement on Manhunt for Seven Escaped Convicts

Aired December 26, 2000 - 2:34 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: Well. we'll have more on that story in just a moment. First, another developing story out of Texas, where the manhunt is on for seven escaped convicts, who police say killed a police officer on Christmas Eve. The slain officer was 29-year-old Aubrey Hawkins. He was shot several times Sunday after confronting the suspects during a sporting goods store potential robbery in Irving, Texas.

For the latest on this, we have on the phone with us the police chief of Irving, Texas, Chief Lowell Cannaday.

Chief, thanks for joining us.

LOWELL CANNADAY, POLICE CHIEF, IRVING, TEXAS: Well, thank you.

KAGAN: What is the latest on the search for the suspects that you can tell us, sir?

CANNADAY: Well, actually, not a great deal more than what most people already know. Obviously, we're having to deal with the tragedy of the officer that's been killed, consuming a great deal of our time. However, we have a very intense investigation that's going on. I have, just about, all of my officers, plus we have a number of people from the corrections department, too, and the Texas Rangers that are doing everything that we can to try locate these four -- or excuse me, these seven suspects that we have.

KAGAN: And all seven suspects are on the loose?

CANNADAY: Yes. All seven still -- we have them identified, but we do not know where they are at this point.

KAGAN: For our viewers who have not been following the story --- I know it's been big news in Texas, but for our viewers across the country, can you tell us a little bit more: what prison they broke out of, and how they were able to do that?

CANNADAY: Well, I can tell you what prison they broke out of. I would probably have to refer you to the corrections department for the details on that, but they broke out of the Connelly unit, which is in Kennedy, Texas. That's down south of San Antonio.

KAGAN: And how long have they been on the loose?

CANNADAY: About two weeks now.

KAGAN: And, as you understand it, when they broke out of prison, they took -- they actually took ammunition and guns from the prison?

CANNADAY: Yes. They took a number of weapons from the arsenal there at the prison, and then from the sporting goods store that they robbed on Christmas Eve. They also took more guns and an undetermined amount of ammunition there.

KAGAN: And what makes you think that they're responsible for this officer's death?

CANNADAY: We have positive identifications from witnesses on all seven suspects.

KAGAN: And we are hearing some news reports that there might be a hotel where there -- that has surrounded where the suspects might be? Do you have information on that?

CANNADAY: There was one of a number of leads that we've been following up on. To my knowledge, that one has turned out that this was not the case.

KAGAN: Do you think that these men are still in the Irving, Texas area?

CANNADAY: To be perfectly frank, we just simply don't know.

KAGAN: Do you think they're together? A group of seven still staying together? Wouldn't that make it easier to catch and easier for them to be sighted?

CANNADAY: Well, we certainly think so.

KAGAN: And yet?

CANNADAY: And yet, so far -- well, we've had a number of people who've called us, and a number of leads, but none of the leads have panned out so far.

KAGAN: You'd ask that those leads, sir, keep coming in?

CANNADAY: Yes. We certainly want those leads to continue. You know, if anybody'd just give us a call, we'll check out any lead that we can come up with.

KAGAN: But meanwhile, it goes without saying that these men are armed and extremely dangerous.

CANNADAY: Extremely dangerous. They've already demonstrated that they're willing to kill.

KAGAN: That's Irving Chief of Police Lowell Cannaday. Thanks for joining us, sir.

Once again, seven suspects -- seven escaped convicts still on the loose in the Irving, Texas area perhaps. That's the closest that they were last sighted as for as we know. Police believe that they are responsible for killing at least one police officer and that they are armed and dangerous.
