| Breaking NewsMassive Earthquake Strikes Central AmericaAired January 13, 2001 - 6:07 p.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. BRIAN NELSON, CNN ANCHOR: A major earthquake struck Central America today, cracking buildings and collapsing a hillside and killing at least two people; and the death toll is expected to rise. The 7.6 magnitude quake struck about 65 miles south-southwest of San Miguel, El Salvador. And we have more on this now from journalist Martin Asturias who is in Guatemala. MARTIN ASTURIAS, REPORTER: The situation in Guatemala has made people go to the supermarkets and try to, you know, stock up on bottled water and food and batteries. But the government is saying that everything is calm, you know, don't panic, take it easy. You know, most of the damage happened in El Salvador. But, be aware; we've had 15 after shocks ever since and we might have some more. NELSON: And those aftershocks affect the region, so El Salvador's president has declared a national emergency and the Guatemalan government has called in police and emergency personnel from vacation and from sick leave.
