Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle Announces Opposition to John Ashcroft's Nomination

Aired January 30, 2001 - 3:39 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JOIE CHEN, CNN ANCHOR: We want to return you now to Washington. There have been some late developments on the nomination of John Ashcroft for attorney general. CNN's Jonathan Karl joins us now from Capitol Hill -- Jonathan.

JONATHAN KARL, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, that's right, Joie. As we await the Judiciary's vote on the John Ashcroft nomination to be attorney general, we have right now on the floor of the U.S. Senate, the Democratic leader, Tom Daschle, announcing his opposition to the Ashcroft nomination. Up until now, Daschle has had very little to say about the nomination. He has left that to the Democrats on the Judiciary Committee. But now he is on the floor of the Senate saying that he has voted for virtually every other Cabinet nomination that has ever come before Senate. In fact, before this, Daschle had only voted against John Tower to be secretary of defense in the Bush administration. But now he's coming on the floor once again voting -- announcing that he will vote against John Ashcroft to be the attorney general of the United States This from the Democratic leader of the Senate, Tom Daschle -- Joie.

CHEN: And Jonathan, to go back, Mr. Ashcroft's nomination will go back to the Judiciary Committee this afternoon. And then what?

KARL: Yeah, we are waiting anytime now for the Judiciary Committee to have their final round of debate on the Ashcroft nomination. They're going to have a vote of that committee, a committee which has nine Democrats and nine Republicans. Once that happens, once the Judiciary Committee votes -- and we expect that late this afternoon -- it will go to the floor of Senate for consideration. The Senate is expected to vote -- to debate the Ashcroft nomination for a couple of days. And they are hoping to have a vote. The Republicans are hoping to have vote on the Ashcroft nomination by Thursday. And again, expectations still here in the Senate is that Ashcroft will ultimately be confirmed. But here you have highest ranking, perhaps the highest-ranking Democrat in the country now saying that is against the Ashcroft nomination and doing it in very forceful terms.

CHEN: CNN's Jonathan Karl for us on Capitol Hill. Again to our viewers which we are seeing there, reports that Senator Tom Daschle went to the floor of the Senate this afternoon to say that when it does come up for a vote, he will vote against John Ashcroft to be Mr. Bush's attorney general. CNN following up on this story as well as other developments on the nominees in Washington. We'll bring you more coverage as it warrants from Washington.
