Three Alabama Prison Escapees Arrested in Tennessee

Aired February 1, 2001 - 7:00 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: Six inmates escaped from a state prison in Alabama. Well, three of them have been found.

So joining us right now on the telephone is the Department of Safety in Tennessee. Dana Keeton with me on the telephone.

Dana, what is the situation and where were these inmates found?

DANA KEETON, DEPARTMENT OF SAFETY, TENNESSEE: Good morning. We have three men in custody in a wooded area off Interstate 40 in Hickman County. These three men have not been taken out of the woods to the command post as of yet. We do believe they are three of the six escapees from Alabama.

LIN: OK, Dana, take me back to the beginning. Where were they found and by whom?

KEETON: The initial sighting occurred late last night at a convenience store at the Bucksnort exit off Interstate 40 when a Hickman County deputy pulled up to the store, ran a check on a tag of a vehicle there, just as a matter of routine, discovered that it was a vehicle allegedly stolen by these escapees. When they saw him, at least four men took off on foot. That -- after that ensued a massive search on foot involving about 60 of our units, several units from several other agencies.

LIN: And were these men armed?

KEETON: We don't know that at this time.

LIN: All right. Well, did they put up a struggle at all?

KEETON: I don't have any details about the actual taking of custody of these three. All I know is that they are in custody. They were found by one of our sergeants and a canine unit and handlers from the Dickson County Police Department here in Tennessee.

LIN: Did the sergeant tell you what state of mind they were in, how they were dressed?

KEETON: I haven't spoken with anyone who -- they're all still out in the woods at this time. They just reported in that they did have three men in custody.

LIN: All right.

KEETON: They're not even back at the command post at this time.

LIN: So what is the next step then? Have you notified the Alabama state prison authorities?

KEETON: I'm sure that's taking place. Obviously the next step is to continue the search.

LIN: All right, thank you very much, Dana Keeton, for joining us this morning.

Once again, three of those six inmates who escaped from an Alabama state prison have been captured today. And as soon as we get more details on this story we will bring them to you.
