Three of Six Alabama Prison Escapees Captured

Aired February 1, 2001 - 8:01 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: We have been following breaking news overnight. And the news now: freedom no longer for three of the six Alabama prison escapees. They have been caught near Nashville, Tennessee.

The six inmates snuck out of the Alabama maximum-security prison at St. Clair Springs sometime Tuesday. The FBI says two of the fugitives robbed and beat a store manager soon after the escape.

Let's learn more details about today's capture of the three of them. Here is Lilla Marigza of CNN national affiliate WKRN.

Lilla, I understand you are right near the capture scene.

LILLA MARIGZA, WKRN REPORTER: That's right, we are standing right here at the BP station where all this started at around midnight last night. This is about 50 miles west of Nashville in Bucksnort, Tennessee. And the vehicle was sighted that police were looking for. They also sighted some of these men they believed were the Alabama six escapees from Birmingham.

Now, just about an hour ago, they took three men into custody after an extensive search through the woods here. They found three men walking at the edge of the woods, took them into custody without incident. But that's where the cooperation stopped. The men would not identify themselves, but now FBI agents have positively ID'd the men.

They say that they are O.C. Borden, 33 years old, convicted of capital murder; Billy Gamble, 24 years old, convicted of robbery, serving a 25-year sentence; and Steve Murphy, 45 years old, convicted also of murder. Murphy also escaped from that same prison back in the 80s.

Those men have now left with armed guards. They're on their way to a federal court in Nashville.

Now, the manhunt continues for the other three of the Alabama six believed to still be in the woods here around the Bucksnort area of Tennessee. Again, this is about 50 miles west of Nashville. This is a rural area. Not too many homes out here, but there are some folks who live in this general area. They have been warned to keep their doors locked as this manhunt continues from the air and from the ground. The federal Marshals, the FBI, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and several local police departments have set up a 10- mile perimeter. They don't intend to let these other three suspects get away if in fact they are in these woods.

Carol, back to you.

LIN: Lilla, maybe you can describe the scene better in these woods, because I'm wondering, since they got a tip about these six suspects, how did three of them get away?

MARIGZA: They actually are not sure that all six of them are still in the woods here. Now, this all started at the BP station right off the interstate. They had some surveillance tape that the FBI looked at. They saw three men who came in, made some sandwiches. About 45 minutes later, the police here went into the woods and spotted these men. That car came back as the one that Alabama was looking for in connection with these escapees. So, they took that surveillance tape and made a positive ID that these were the men that they were looking for.

Now, there have also been some sightings, as I understand it, possible sightings of these men in Georgia. But according to FBI agents, they believe that the other three men are in fact in the woods here, based on what the three suspects that they have in custody right now have told them. And, of course, they say those may or may not be the most reliable witnesses, but that's what they are going on right now.

They do believe that those men may be armed because of what they found in the car: evidence that they may be armed. They also found a shotgun about a half a mile from where the car was found early this morning. And the authorities here tell us that may be a prison-issued shotgun because of the markings on it. But, again, they do believe that the three who are still out there may be armed.

LIN: All right, thank you very much, Lilla Marigza.

And during your live shot, we just want to let folks know that the surveillance tape that you were watching was the BP surveillance tape that Lilla was just explaining of the suspects being sighted at the cash register.

Thanks so much, Lilla.
