Riser at High School Collapses, Injuring Many

Aired March 29, 2001 - 12:04 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: A riser's collapsed in the Dallas area.

We have on the phone with us right now Sergeant Keith Cannon (ph). He's with the Richardson Police Department.

Sergeant, good morning to you, in Dallas.

SGT. KEITH CANNON (ph): Good morning.

KAGAN: We have live pictures right now coming up from our affiliate WFAA in Dallas, and we're watching, I think, a student being rolled away on a stretcher. Can you tell us exactly what happened at this high school?

CANNON (ph): Yes, ma'am. At approximately 10:00 this morning, 500 students were being photographed on the south side of the Richardson High School, located on Belt Line Road in Richardson. They were standing on portable risers that had been put in front of the school. They collapsed, and approximately 15 students received injuries when they collapsed.

KAGAN: Do we know how severe those injuries are?

CANNON (ph): They were all minor as of the reports at this time. There's no life threatening injury.

KAGAN: OK, so the pictures that we seeing of the students being wheeled away and ambulances -- I guess these are precautionary measures, just to get the students treatment.

CANNON (ph): And probably minor injuries of broken bones, bruises and cuts.

KAGAN: Very good. So it looks like everyone's going to be OK. There could have been a much more serious accident today in Richardson, Texas.

Sergeant Keith Cannon (ph), thank you so much for that information.

Once again, those pictures coming to us from our affiliate WFAA.

The students at Richardson High School were on top of those risers earlier today to take their class pictures when the riser collapsed. And as we heard the sergeant tell us, there are a number of students injured, but it appears everyone is going to be OK.
