Arrest of Milosevic Confirmed

Aired March 30, 2001 - 4:51 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JOIE CHEN, CNN ANCHOR: We want to move back to a story that we have been following here on CNN. Throughout the day there have been developments in Yugoslav -- the surrounding of the home where former President Slobodan Milosevic had been staying in Belgrade. There had been reports that his arrest might be imminent.

Joining us again on the telephone line is Bratislav Grubacic, who is a journalist who has been covering this situation in Belgrade.

Can you tell us what the latest development is there?

BRATISLAV GRUBACIC, JOURNALIST: The latest -- well, like I said is basically the Serbian government confirmed that Mr. Milosevic was arrested tonight. I am now standing in front of the Belgrade Court Building, where we have a couple of hundred of people who are waiting for Milosevic to come to prison.

Some 15 minutes ago, there were four jeeps with dark glasses which came in and they switched towards the gates and they went in the (UNINTELLIGIBLE) prison here in Belgrade Court. We couldn't see Mr. Milosevic because of dark glasses, but everybody supposed that he was inside. Then the gates were closed. Later on -- a couple of minutes later on the Serbian government confirmed that Mr. Milosevic had been arrested, and finally we have Milosevic being imprisoned after all of this time, awaiting him to go to prison and to be tried, particularly facing, on the 35th of March when the U.S. Congress has to decide if American aides will go to Yugoslavia.

CHEN: Can you tell us a little bit about the reaction of the crowds there? You had been telling us about the huge crowd that had gone to the residence where Milosevic had been staying. What is going on there now?

GRUBACIC: It was not so huge (UNINTELLIGIBLE) it was a couple of hundreds of people around the building, and there were carrying badges with Slobodan -- supporting Milosevic, but we didn't see any uncontrollable events. There were no pledges (ph), there were just supporters who were just peacefully trying to protect their former president, but they didn't manage.

CHEN: They didn't do anything to try to prevent him being taken into custody, as near as you could tell?

GRUBACIC: No, practically they didn't do anything. There was a problem earlier in the evening, when a guard was to be changed in Milosevic's house, and those guys who were protecting Milosevic earlier rejected some orders. And there were some 20 of them who were armed and who didn't want to leave Milosevic. But then after a couple of hours of the negotiations and after a couple hours of negotiation with Milosevic himself, showing him the warrant which was issued by the minister of the interior, he decided, himself, to surrender peaceful. So he was brought here in this (UNINTELLIGIBLE) court of Belgrade.

CHEN: Bratislav Grubacic in Belgrade; a journalist reporting to us on the telephone.

The latest development: confirmation by the Serbian government that Slobodan Milosevic has been arrested by the local police there.
