CNN BREAKING NEWS

Second Attack Against U.S. Marines in Kuwait

Aired October 9, 2002 - 14:59   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: I'm told we have breaking news. We're going to the Pentagon for Barbara Starr.
Another attack, according to Barbara, against U.S. Marines in Kuwait -- I guess on the outside of Kuwait there.

Barbara, what can you tell us?

BARBARA STARR, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Kyra, let me clarify some details for you. About 2 1/2 hours ago, U.S. military personnel driving in a vehicle outside of Kuwait City came under attack. According to sources, the military vehicle known as a Humvee was overtaken by a civilian vehicle with two occupants inside. The civilian vehicle came alongside the military vehicle. The civilians inside apparently pointed a weapon at the U.S. military personnel.

The U.S. military personnel then opened fire, firing into the car that was carrying these civilians, threatening them with a weapon. The U.S. military personnel were uninjured. They returned to camp. They reported that the last time they saw this civilian vehicle, it was careening off the road. And the matter is now under investigation.

So, again, U.S. personnel in Kuwait threatened about 2 1/2 hours ago, a weapon pulled on them as they drove along. They opened fire. There is no further word on who the civilian assailants might have been or their fate. But the U.S. personnel returned to camp, no injuries amongst the U.S. personnel -- Kyra.

PHILLIPS: Barbara, this is an area tightly controlled by the government. Any word on how these individuals have infiltrated the area?

STARR: Well, this, of course, is in Kuwait proper, in the country itself.

The Kuwaiti government, of course, is a close ally of the United States and does maintain significant control in their country. But it does appear that there are potential threats. This is, of course, the second attack in two days on U.S. military personnel: yesterday, one Marine killed, one injured in an exchange of gunfire.

The Kuwaiti government apparently is cracking down. Our producers in Kuwait today have been told by the Kuwaiti Ministry of Interior a number of people are under arrest and many people are detained, an apparent roundup after yesterday's incident, and now this latest incident about 2 1/2 hours ago -- Kyra. PHILLIPS: Barbara Starr from the Pentagon, thank you.
