Sniper on Loose: Administration Offers 250 ATF Agents

Aired October 15, 2002 - 12:05   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR: The Bush administration is offering the services of 250 federal agents to help bring these serial killings to an end.
Our Justice correspondent Kelli Arena is joining us.

Kelli -- first of all on Linda Franklin, the fact that an FBI analyst now has been gunned down, as far as the FBI is concerned -- and you cover the FBI for us -- does this mean there possibly could be a change in who will be in charge of this investigation?

KELLI ARENA, CNN JUSTICE CORRESPONDENT: No, this makes no difference at all. I mean, obviously, this is one of their own. It hits them at a more personal level. But the -- this will remain in the hands of local authorities.

But that's not to say they have not had the full force and support of the federal government behind them from the very beginning of this investigation. Wolf, as you know, there have been ATF agents, FBI agents, Secret Service agents, all available for extra manpower. State and locals have been able to use the FBI's database to prioritize and categorize information.

ATF laboratories have been at their disposal for ballistics testing. And as you know, each and every time one of the shell casings or the bullets is confirmed to be that of the snipers, that is the work of the ATF.

So, there have been -- you know, it has been a unified effort on the part of federal, state and local law enforcement. So, no indication that this investigation, in terms of the lead, is changing hands -- Wolf.

BLITZER: And your sources are basically saying the same thing that Michael Okwu was reporting, that the fact that Linda Franklin worked for the FBI is simply a coincidence in this particular case.

ARENA: That's right. It seems to be another random shooting -- Wolf.

BLITZER: All right, Kelli Arena, stand by. We're going to be coming back to you as this investigation continues.
