CNN BREAKING NEWS

Gunman Opens Fire in Israel

Aired November 28, 2002 - 08:38   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Breaking news, again, out of Israel right now. Getting word through our folks there on the ground in Jerusalem, a gunman apparently opened up fire in northern Israel at a bus station there. No word yet on casualties, but we are told there are several. That word also from Israeli radio reporting that the attacker also carried some sort of explosive belt that did not detonate. But indeed, shots were fired at this bus station in northern Israel. We'll continue to track that down.
All of this coinciding, of course, with the attacks on Israelis that we've talked about throughout the day here. Back in Kenya, apparently two missiles fired at an airliner, a passenger jet, a charter jet with Israelis onboard leaving Mombasa in southeastern Kenya. Five minutes after that, three suicide bombers hitting and targeting Israeli tourists at a hotel nearby. All of this coming down, again, as we unfold things from halfway around the world. We'll track it all for you. More in a moment when we continue.

COSTELLO: Lots of breaking news to tell you about on this Thanksgiving Day.

Let's start in Jerusalem where I'm just getting word that a gunman has opened fire at passengers in a central bus station there. Police say there were several casualties. That's all we know about it right now. We're going to get some pictures for you from Israeli television, but we don't have that as yet.

Also, in Kenya, in the southeastern part of Kenya, in Mombasa, a hotel was attacked in some sort of green SUV. Some suicide bombers were inside. They rammed into that hotel known for housing many Israeli tourists. We believe at least 13 people were killed inside of that hotel. Apparently one of the men in the car got out and wrestled around with security there, but he managed to get in. He had an explosive belt around his waist. It went off. There was also more explosives inside the vehicle. They went off, too.

Also, an Arkia Airlines jet left Mombasa with lots of Israeli people on board and apparently at least two missiles were fired at it from the ground. It missed the plane. All 261 passengers are OK this morning. They landed safely in Tel Aviv. Talked to the pilot just a short time ago. He thought it was some sort of large bird hitting the aircraft, but it wasn't. It was apparently these two missiles going by, and thank goodness they missed the plane.

A lot going on this morning -- Bill. HEMMER: Indeed there is, and we'll continue to track that from all fronts, Carol.
